This week's episode features an interview with Greg Anderson from the legendary experimental/drone metal duo Sunn0))). Back in April, Sunn0))) released their tenth, self-released album through Seattle's iconic Sub Pop record label. Find out more about Sunn0))) (and purchase their music) here: https://sunn.bandcamp.com/

Nick's Pick of the Week is Zoh Amba's Eye's Full, which was released on Friday June 5th. You can hear it in all the usual places, or purchase it here; https://zohamba.bandcamp.com/album/eyes-full and my review can be read below.

Zoh Amba: Eyes Full (Matador)

Released June 5th 2026

Zoh Amba has built a reputation as one of the most exciting saxophonists to emerge from New York’s avant-garde scene. Amba has worked with experimental luminaries like John Zorn and Shazad Ismaily and has frequently collaborated with (legendary) Australian drummer Jim White. Her latest release —which is being billed as her debut solo record— Eyes Full, is a stylistic about turn for Amba, an album of stripped back, confessional folk/country that is as astounding as it is surprising.

Eyes Full contains a cast of characters that includes —the aforementioned— White on drums as well as bassist Landon George, guitarists Kevin Hyland and Adam Brisbin, violinist Gabby Fluke-Mogul and Colin Miller, also on drums. Recording took place in Asheville, North Carolina, which (potentially) accounts for the album’s rustic feel, with additional sessions, for the tracks Blueberry Thorn and Emahoy, taking place in Brooklyn, New York City. Released through the iconic indie label Matador, Eyes Full contains elements of bands like Big Thief and is poised to introduce Amba to an audience less acquainted with her experimental output.

Across thirteen songs, Amba bears her soul, describing the highs and lows of various personal friendships and relationships. OCD and Another Time are country inflected ballads, with a twist of Daniel Johnston, whereas Dead End Street, Thousand Years, Odd Jobs and PG Tips add a touch of slacker rock to keep things interesting and stomping in a little grit for good measure. Whether owing to the cast of characters involved, or Amba’s generally eclectic nature, there is more than enough variety across the album’s forty minute run time to keep the shortest attention spans entertained.

Amba is a unique voice among singer/songwriters, likely due to her background in avant-garde and experimental music. Eyes Full, as previously mentioned, is likely to raise her profile amongst an audience with indie sensibilities, without abandoning her roots. There is enough weirdness across the record to skew it into less traditional territory, without deviating too far or losing focus. Amba seems to be most comfortable when she is out of her comfort zone and one can only hope that this unexpectedly poignant offering is a sign of more surprises to come.

ALBUM OF THE WEEK - June 8, 2026

Baby Cool - Infinity Baby

Grace Cuell writes songs as a way of making sense of the world around her. On Infinity Baby, her second album as Baby Cool, she takes a gentle look at what it means to be human as the pendulum swings between shadow and light.

Where her debut Earthling on the Road to Self Love felt almost whimsical in its search for meaning, Infinity Baby is more grounded and honest. The songs move through desire, cynicism, devotion and surrender, sometimes defeat, but always circle back to a kind of hope. It’s a record about patterns: the ones we inherit, the ones we repeat, and the ones we choose to keep.

Working alongside producer Samuel Joseph who has worked with the likes of King Gizzard, Family Jordan and more, the album was made in the hills of the Northern Rivers. Musically, Baby Cool continues to blur psychedelia, folk and kraut-pop, with the spaciousness of her natural surroundings ever-present in the songwriting and production.

4ZZZ's Album of the Week highlights an Australian release as selected by a volunteer committee. Albums and EPs considered have been released in the past month, and processed by the music department.

102.1FM and Zed Digital Highlight | Zed Games

This month we’re spotlighting Zed Games as our 102.1FM and Zed Digital Highlight! Tune in on 102.1FM every Thursday night from 6-7PM and on Zed Digital on Fridays 6-7PM.

Zed Games brings you the best in gaming news, reviews, community and culture. As an independent voice in the gaming media space, it means listeners can trust the program to deliver news, reviews, and opinions that are completely free from bias or commercial influence.

The team host a free showcase in collaboration with Netherworld every 2-3 months. They source 7-9 games developed within SEQ and invite the developers to share their projects with the public, while curious gamers can play games made right in our backyard and connect with the people behind them.

It is a program that takes many hours to put together each week and is always an interesting listen.

Volunteer Highlight | Shane Doidge, our Reception Coordinator

This month, we’re highlighting our amazing reception coordinator, Shane Doidge as volunteer of the month!

Shane has been a part of the Zed family since the 70s and 80s! In the past two years, he started coming into the station to volunteer: packing and posting in Radiothon, then helping with Hot 100 voting and now is our reception coordinator!

Shane dedicated so much time to make sure our reception doors stay open 6 days a week, our 4ZZZ subscriptions and merch orders are processed and brings so much warm inner glow to our hallways.

In April, we had so many volunteer opportunities pop up from working door, merch, social media, and artist liaison at 4ZZZ events including the From The Roots Carpark Gig and 4ZZZ Youth Week Show. We also had a callout to join the Live Reviews team. If writing about local gigs is something you dig, it was a perfect opportunity.

If any of those opportunities caught your fancy and you’re not a volunteer at 4ZZZ, consider signing up and doing a volunteer induction! Click here to learn more about volunteering at 4ZZZ.

Thank you Shane and all our 4ZZZ volunteers.

4 Years of Tranzmission!

Our amazing show, Tranzmission, turned 4 years old this week! Started by Ez, the show is now hosted by a diverse crew of professional trans and genders. It is such an important program on our grid to amplify the trans and gender diverse voices of Magandjin/Brisbane and beyond, bringing you trans community news, events and discussion. Here are some words from the Tranzmission team:

"Four years ago, Tranzmission carved out a space on the dial that didn’t exist in this country before, a space for trans and gender‑diverse communities to speak loudly, proudly, and without apology.

This week, we celebrate not just a show, but a movement. Tranzmission has become a lifeline, a megaphone, a warm hug, and a rallying cry powered by voices who refuse to be erased and the listeners who show up week after week in solidarity.

Every episode has carried stories that matter. Every guest has brought courage. Every listener has helped weave a community stitched together with care, solidarity, and fierce love.

In a world that still tries to legislate us out of existence, Tranzmission reminds us that joy is resistance, storytelling is activism, and community is unstoppable.

Here’s to four years of truth‑telling, boundary‑breaking radio.
Here’s to the next four louder, braver, and even more unapologetically us.

Agitate, Educate, Organise - Because when trans voices are heard, the world listens."

4ZZZ Wins QMA Lifetime Achievement Award

4ZZZ won the Lifetime Achievement Award at the QMA for 2026!

It's hard to put 4ZZZ and our lifetime into a couple minute speech, but Dr. Heather Anderson, our 4ZZZ historian and community radio expert, more than did it justice. Shining a light to how 4ZZZ has remained unapologetic for 50 years in platforming local music, reporting matters that mainstream media don't touch and how important it is to give ordinary people access to the airwaves.

The award doesn't belong to any one person. 4ZZZ has remained alive through countless hours of countless volunteers over decades. Anyone that has walked through the doors of 4ZZZ to playlist a show, write a news story or input music, this award belongs to them.

The 50th of the station last year was a huge milestone in the station journey. So many people from volunteers to announcers and 4ZZZ staff gave up hours and days to make sure all the events happened. It was no small feat and their work truly made the 50th anniversary one to remember.

A special shoutout to Screamfeeder who performed the QMA’s wearing all 4ZZZ shirts and Ball Park Music dedicating their Album of the Year win to 4ZZZ Radio.

Thank you Heather for such a beautiful speech and thank you Queensland Music Awards for the recognition of 4ZZZ.
